This November, Tenement Jazz Band are on tour! This is the young band that’s reviving the sounds of traditional Jazz in Scotland, bringing new energy and excitement to music that was shocking and thrilling in equal measure in its time. Friday 15th November, they'll be playing in Dumfries for the very first time!
Formed in early 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland, their aims are to capture the raw energy and excitement of the earliest jazz recordings, with most of their repertoire composed before 1930. They aim to find and revive lesser-heard songs and cultivate their own interpretations of these, all in order to captivate experienced jazzers, dancing persons, and uninitiated ears alike.
In their brief existence so far they have performed at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee, Islay and Glasgow Jazz Festivals. They have collaborated with various local musicians via their own Cellar Session residency, and performed their own sell-out show on the Edinburgh Fringe telling the story of the 'Red Hot Roots of Jazz' from turn of the century New Orleans and beyond.
They recorded and released their debut EP, ‘New Orleans Wiggle’ in June 2018 and will be releasing a follow up CD in July 2019, alongside shows at Edinburgh Jazz Festival and 8 shows at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. They are nominated for Best Band at the Scottish Awards 2019, with the winner to be announced at Glasgow Drygate on June 9th.
