Demi-paradise Productions present the perfect curtain raiser for Christmas.
Professional actor/readers Sue McCormick, Stephen Tomlin and Sarah Thurstan team up with popular acapella singers L.O.K.A. to present an evergreen celebration of Yuletide in words and music perfectly suited to the Theatre Royal stage. Director Sue McCormick has compiled a cracker of a programme drawing on a variety of traditional and contemporary material to please most tastes. A Winter Warmer promises to be the kind of Christmas entertainment that gets even the most ‘bah humbug’ of us in the right frame of mind for the festive season ahead.
Company Biographies
Sarah Thurstan is very pleased to be performing for the first time at the Theatre Royal Dumfries. Her performances for Demi-Paradise at Lancaster Castle included Countess Roussillon in All’s Well that Ends Well and Gertrude in Hamlet in 2008. Sarah is known for her portrayal of judges and magistrates in Emmerdale, Coronation Street and East Enders. Other cameo TV roles include Mrs Brown’s Boys, Tracey Beaker, A & E, Silent Witness, Casualty, The Grand, Prime Suspect. Hollyoaks, Where the Heart is and Heartbeat. Sarah runs her own company ‘Performance Link Limited’ which takes theatre skills into business, academia and the arts across the UK and abroad.
Sue McCormick has worked in theatres all over the country, including Royal Exchange, Library, Palace and Opera House in Manchester, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Chipping Norton Theatre, Oldham Coliseum, Wolverhampton Grand, Bristol Old Vic, Theatre by the Lake Keswick, Plymouth Theatre Royal, New Vic Stoke and The Dukes, Lancaster. Sue has toured extensively with Northern Broadsides and Hull Truck Theatre. Her TV includes Hollyoaks, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Holby City, Casualty and Where the Heart Is. She has recorded several plays and features for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Learning Online. Sue also works as a theatre director and playwright.
Stephen Tomlin For the last 46 years, since qualifying as a teacher from the Central School of Speech & Drama, Stephen has worked extensively as an actor in a long list of television, theatre and audio roles as well as being a director, writer/researcher and role player. Based in Lancaster for most of his long and varied career, Stephen also produced promenade Shakespeare, ghost story readings and Christmas productions at Lancaster Castle under the demi-paradise banner from 2000 - 2016. He now lives in the Northumberland National Park with his partner, the artist & illustrator Kim Lewis.
LOKA are a female acapella singing group who have earned a reputation as festival and fringe favourites across the region and won the ‘Performing Artist of the Year’ category at the Dumfries & Galloway Life Awards in 2017. Known for their wonderful harmonies and range of material, LOKA love all kinds of music and typically perform Contemporary, Scottish and Folk styles. Their selection of seasonal songs for A Winter Warmer will be no less eclectic and wonderful to hear in the perfect acoustic setting of the Theatre Royal’s stage.
