Adult Acting Workshops

Restarting in 2017

The Theatre Royal Dumfries and The Guild of Players now offer weekly acting and drama classes for adults and young people alike; catering for all levels of experience from beginners to the more advanced. The classes are led by professional theatre director and actress, Ali Anderson-Dyer MA.

Sessions are designed to explore acting and other elements of theatre in an open, fun and friendly environment. All ages and backgrounds are welcome and a willingness to try is all that is required to join.

The Adult Acting Workshops

Each term is made up of 10-13 weeks and is further broken down into two parts, the Theatre Skills Workshop and the Script Session alternating bi-weekly. This allows participants the choice of joining one or both parts, depending on their skills and experience, as well as the freedom to come every other week, should regular involvement or commitment to the classes, be difficult.

Theatre Skills Workshop: A two-hour sessions for beginners full of games and technique based exercises, ideal for developing communication skills and building confidence. Subjects covered include storytelling, improvisation, being in the moment, realism, naturalism and stylized theatre. Every term starts with a Theatre Skills Workshop.

The Script Session: A two-hour session covering a variety of acting and allied theatre skills but focusing on a specific play, following ensemble-led activities and exercises; in order to get under its skin. Subjects will include script work, character development and developing your own process.

Participants are advised (but not required) to enrol on the Theatre Skills Workshop for at least a couple of sessions, before progressing on to the Script Session classes.

Future opportunities and performances will depend on thoughts of the class but might include a workshop presentation to an invited audience or rehearsals towards a fuller production.

All over 16s welcome and it may be possible to join at various times throughout the year, so come to try us out and see if you enjoy yourself and learn something new!
